[ WHAT IS RjDj ]
RjDj is a music application for the iphone. It uses sensory input to generate and control the music you are listening to.
RjDj is promoting a music genre that we call “reactive”. The sound that listeners hear is produced by digital devices in the very moment it is listened to. Composers of reactive music often make heavy use of sensory input, which makes the environment of the listener part of the music that is heard. Compositions are called “Scenes”. Scenes have a different musical structure than traditional compositions and they often have no clear beginning and end. Some scenes promote active listener involvement and others promote passive listening. In any case, when listening to RjDj, take care and enjoy your mind twisting hearing sensations.
RjDj scenes are composed using a software called PD. If you are an artist, composer or programmer and want to create your own scene, you will find all you need here. It would be really cool to hear back from you, we will certainly bundle more and more scenes with the application.

[ INSTRUCTORS ]

Frank Barknecht is a writer, software developer and sound/code artist living in Cologne, Germany. His favorite weapon of mass creation is Pure Data. He has been involved in the "Pd scene" since around 2001, where he is supporting new users through the Pd mailing lists and helps maintain the central code repository. He wrote a handful of Pd objects like the popular fluid~ soundfont synthesizer for Pd, but most of the time he concentrates on developing libraries of Pd patches, so called abstractions. These include the preset handler SSSAD, the [list]-abs, a port of Karlheinz Essl's Realtime Composition Library for Max/MSP to Pd and more. Frank is also a member of the RjDj team and one of the maintainers of the rj-library of abstractions.

Florian Waldner is working as a reactive music producer for RjDj in London. He is interested in more active ways of experiencing music, be it reactive music or sound installations. Before he joined RjDj he worked at the Department Knowledge Engineering at the University of Vienna in the field of conceptual modelling. He received his master’s degree in International Business Administration at the University of Vienna and studies Digital Art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
